Treat prompt engineering as a skill you add

Generative AI has created a new job title. History suggests you should build it into your toolkit and keep your expertise broad.

Navigating the current AI landscape can evoke a mix of emotions, from excitement to doubt. Generative tools like ChatGPT, Gemini, Copilot, Midjourney and DALL·E offer an outlet for our curiosity. However, usability challenges such as unreliability, speed issues, biases, and a lack of personalization persist.

This dilemma has given rise to a new professional niche: the prompt specialist, or prompt engineer. The demand for such specialists is on the rise, but history suggests that this trend might not endure. Think back to Google’s foundation in the late ’90s, built on easy access to vast data: many specialists in database access then faced diminished demand.

While pursuing a career as a prompt engineer may seem lucrative in the short term, it’s prudent to consider it as a skill set rather than a long-term career path.

Diversifying your expertise ensures resilience in an ever-evolving industry.
